Other then people that nit-pick about the noise of the tray mechanism opening and closing i doubt there is much of a difference between most DVD/RW on the market.
I own 3 Samsung 22X dvd writers and the Asus you've linked.
The 24X does seem to burn dvds a little quicker, though i've never timed it.
Either of those units will be compatible.

The majority of drives out now are fairly the same overall in speeds. Some recommended drives include Plextor (my personal favorite), NEC, Sony, Lite-On, Samsung and LG.

I recommend going to NCIX and look at the customer reviews. If you see a drive with 25 reviews averaging over 4/5 stars then go with that.

they are all mostly the same, the only criteria i have is that some are noisy when spinning up, in my experience LG are noisy.

I have used that $17 ASUS in a dozen or so builds with no problems. It's the one I have now. Very fast , cheap, and reliable. It is a bit loud though at spinup is my only complaint.
