GTX460 is about the same performance with HD5830.
Well, of course GTX465-GTX470-GTX480 are FASTER than GTX460. Also produce more heat and noise... :)

I have seen some reviews that indicate the 465 may actually be slower in some circumstances.

Becareful of fanboys the 460 trumps the 5830.

The 460 is 2-4 times faster than a 8800 GTS 512MB. It's also quiet, low heat, and great for gaming. Of course it also depends on which 460 you get. the 1GB version is faster than the 768mb version. There are some cards that come overclocked also. In benchmarks the 460 is close to a 5870 but the 5870 is maybe 2% faster. It depends on which OC version of the 460 you get too. It could be faster in some instances.

That's not even the overclocked version too. The OC version should add up to 10% to those benchmarks. Some cards are overclocked further so maybe up to 15%. The 460 can basically be OC to match that of a 470 pretty easily.

At stock speeds, GTX 460 performs better than HD 5830 and on par with 5850(in some games) so its overall slower than 5870.

"The 5830 takes victories in Crysis and Aliens vs. Predator, but is otherwise bested by the GeForce GTX 460 1 GB. Good thing it’s generally cheaper and comes equipped with AMD’s Eyefinity multi-display technology—that’s enough to keep these two cards competitive. "

The GTX460 is placed nicely between the 5850 and the 5830. It tends to loose more often the the 5850 but tends to win more often to the 5830. This is highly dependent on what games you play. Also, the GTX460 in SLI has a bit more advantage on the HD5850 in Crossfire as the GTX460 scales better then the HD5850. This is not to say that ATI has bad cards or the HD5850 isn't good, the GTX460 is just a very competative card.

It's either a typo, or he probably was comparing overclocked gtx 460 agaisnt stock 5870's.

No, GTX460 is faster than 260. Of course GTX470 is faster than GTX460, but it can get hot pretty fast, if you have good airflow inside your case then you can go for GTX470.
your choice...
