Hello,
I'm planning to add an internal RAID 5 to my computer w/ 3x2TB HDDs (w/ Intel Matrix Storage Controller).

Which are currently the best drives?

I found these three (less than 200 EUR)
*Seagate Constellation ES.3 SATA III 2TB (ST2000NM0033) //EUR 190
*Western Digital RE4 2 tb, SATA 6Gb/s (WD2000FYYZ) //EUR 160
*Hitachi Ultrastar 7K3000 SATA III 2TB (HUA723020ALA640) //EUR 150

Is it true that you should use only enterprise HDDs for building a RAID?
I'm using the raid only for media files (film editing computer). My system drive will be an SSD.
Price matters.

tia, all the best

I wouldn't say "should" is the definitive word but there are defintely some drives you should not put in a raid. Green drives being on the top of the list.

Western Digital Red drives also support raid in addition to the RE series.

thanks very much!

Sounds good - especially the low noise of the Reds. But they only run at 5400 rpm...
This will maby be too slow?

The lower the rpm, the better. Stop listening to marketing gimmick!

Since you run onboard RAID aka 'FakeRAID' you require TLER to avoid disks dropping out of the RAID array. This means WD Red series probably is your best bet.

Do not feel safe with windows-based RAID. It is not reliable enough to do what you have been told: protect against disk failure. You need backups to provide data security. It will take another 4-6 years before storage on Windows platforms is reliable. Do not trust low-quality RAID implementations to protect your data! You have been warned.

Thanks very much for your input.

I have to make backups of my mediafiles anyway.
So it's maybe better to go for an RAID 0. performance wise.
