Can you provide some details? Did you check device manager? Is the
card seen at all? Did ANYTHING happen after you plugged it in? Is
there a BIOS setting to enable the mini-PCI slot?

thanks Andrew

It's not seen on device manager nor was there any plug and play magic
when it was turned back on.

I'll check the BIOS and report back.

Are you sure that the mini-PCI slot is even hooked up in the laptop?
Or did you just find it on the laptop and assume you could put a card
in there? (Did you find an internal antenna in there to hook up as
well? If not - that doesn't bode well...)

all sorted!!! It turns out I was way too gentle installing it. Opened up
the box and shoved it in good and proper. All working now.

Thanks, though, for bothering to want to help even when I gave sod all
info :-)
