I bought a gateway pc for a decent price $500. I was going to use it mostly for school and watching movies/videos . It has a phenom iix4 820 2.8 ghz and a hd5450. I probably am going to want to upgrade in the future so I can game on it as well. I have a few questions. 1. Can the cpu be upgraded ? If so how can I tell what will work. 2. I know i can fit a 5770 in it(read someone else did it to the same model) but how can I tell what else will fit and be compatible? . 3) Would I have to put a different motherboard in it. I believe the motherboard is a Gateway rs780. Sorry for my stupidy and thank you so much for your time.

You will probably need to replace the PSU for anything more than an HD5670. The processor is fine and doesn't need to be replaced. You may be able to replace it with one of the x6 processors but unless you frequently run cpu intensive highly multi-threaded applications I wouldn't bother.

An Nvidia card would work fine with your motherboard. The GTX 460 is a good card that is the next level up from the HD5770. What is your monitor's native resolution?

An HD5770 will actually be overkill for that resolution so stick with that or if you would rather not replace the power supply even an HD5670 would be pretty good.
