Am I missing something?

To me two HD5770s or two GTX460s in X-Fire/SLI seem like they would yield higher performance than a HD5870 at a lower price.

Can anyone think of any reason not to go in this direction?

Also which would be better? HD5770s in X-FIRE or GTX460s in SLI?

I am thinking that two GTX460s would yield the biggest bang for the buck.

two GTX 460's would be your best bet. the down side? you will need to wait for drivers and patches to enable SLI in some games. Not all new games support SLI/CF on launch and some flat out don't ever do it.

Yeah, 2 GTX 460s or overclocking an HD5850 or GTX 470 are the best choices for the money at the moment although holding off a few weeks to see the price/performance of the HD6000 cards is a good idea.
