I'm trying to build a cheap system for around $300. I'm just having a little trouble figuring out whether the stuff I would get is going to be upgradeable in the future. I'm looking for about 2GB ram, dual core CPU, 250-500GB HD. I already have a monitor, mouse, keyboard, and I'm planning on using Ubuntu, so that's all taken care of. The part I'm having trouble with is what motherboard and case would be good if I plan on upgrading majorly in the next few years, yet still keeping it cheap initially. Could anyone provide a idea of a build like this?

On the cheap... Go with an AM3 motherboard and an Athlon CPU if you are looking for a good upgrade option down the road. This puts you respectable for now and allows for a CPU upgrade down the road (AM3 of course). 2GB of memory is fine, but if you can afford it go with 4GB. Look for 4GB kits for $50 and under. 500GB hard drives can be had for under $50 as well.

FYI...

4GB DDR3 ($34)

500GB HD ($40)

$226 is quite a bit left over for CPU, MB and case.
