Keyboard and mouse stopped working all of a sudden

Hello,
my pc worked fine for ages then all of a sudden (because my cat was playing with cords under the pc, damn cat!!!) my keyboard and mouse, both usb, stopped working. After much troubleshooting I discovered the I can now only plug in on usb device at a time. Has this happened to anyone else and possible have a fix? Is it a power problem? Could my cat have possibly caused a surge?
