I recently bought one of these as a step in my upgrading of my PC.

I am currently running a ASRock K7VT4A Pro motherboard with an Athlon XP1800+ cpu (old but reliable) with Radeon HD9500 AGP graphics card and a 350W PSU. I was given an ASUS A8R32 MVP DeLuxe mobo with (currently) unknown AMD cpu. This has a PCI-E graphics card slot, so I bought a Sapphire HD5750 card to fit and the XFX750 to power it.

Took the ASrock out and installed the ASUS, connected it up and switched on. Fans run, mobo light on but nothing else. No beeps, no POST, no splash screen, nothing. I think that the ASUS is toast so I put the ASRock back in and hook it up to the XFX750. Same thing happens, no beeps, no POST. So now I think the XFX750 is faulty.

I then try hooking up the XFX750 in a HP D330M that I use to check client/server stuff. That works fine.

So now I think that not only is the ASUS a dud, but that in the process the ASRock has been killed. I test this by putting the old PSU back in with the ASRock. It's all fine now.

I've tried stripping down the ASRock to mobo, CPU+fan, speaker (for the beeps) and power switch. No memory, no graphics, nothing else at all. If I use the old psu, it beeps. If I use the XFX750, it doesn't.

So the XFX works with the Intel cpu in the HP, but doesn't work with the AMD cpus on the other boards.

Any ideas? Could it be that there is a problem with connections on both the AMD mobos and the XFX is more sensitive to these than the old PSU so is refusing to switch on fully?

Did you plug in the supplementary power connector for the video card?

The black one at the top. You have four 6+2-Pin PCI express connectors on that PSU, use one of them, the 6-pin part.

Thanks for you input. A little more info. The "old" PSU is a FSP250- 60GTV which was the original in the PC

Graphic Card :- The ASRock/Radeon 9500 has a peripheral type connection and it was pluged in for tests of both PSUs. The ASUS/Sapphire has a PCI-E connection and it was plugged in on the XFX test.

I'll post results later today.

CPU power cord :- the ASRock does not have a 4pin ATX/EPS socket (it's old). The ASUS/ Sapphire has this connection and it was plugged in.

Apart from the XFX, I don't have a PSU with a 24 pin connector. The HP has a 20 pin ATX plus the 4 pin ATX/EPS. The XFX has a 24pin ATX with detachable section so it can be either 20 or 24 pin, so the ASRock is connected with the 20 pin version, the HP with the 20 pin and the 4 pin, the ASUS with the 24 pin and the 4 pin.

Apart from the 2 non-working mobo being AMD powered, the only other common feature is that they are in the same case. I am about to remove the ASRock from the case and try it out of the case/on the bench with the FSP with minimal config, listening for beeps, and then repeat the same test with the XFX.

Just completed the "on the bench" test. With the ASRock/FSP set up, I get beeps. ASRock/XFX I get fan running, mobo power light on, no beeps. With ASUS/XFX I get fan running, mobo light on, no beeps.

So it's not a case short that is causing the problem

On the advice of XFX Tech support, the PSU will be returned to the retailer.
