I have a fairly old Pentium 4 1.6Mhz with 352 MB SDRAM. 2 PCI slots are free along with an AGP 4x slot. Will installing a graphics card improve performance. I dont do any gaming. Which graphics card would u recommend if any are available for this old system?
If you don't do any gaming, then I doubt it would increase any performance for what you do. Honestly, for what you would have to spend on a video card for an AGP 4x, just buy a cheap new HP or Compaq and it'll be 100x faster.
Which operating system are you using? Support for older operating systems can be weak at best, absent at worst.
If this system is used for 'light' tasks like web surfing and office work then an improved graphics card will probably have little or no effect.
You say 'improve performance', where is it lacking? Perhaps a good cleanout and defragmentation of the hard drive will improve matters enough, although more RAM may also be of benefit.
Of course an all new box is an option and a cheap dual core would run rings around this current one and would have a fully up-to-date OS (probably) included in the price.
Yeah, which would require a whole new motherboard, RAM, and probably a new PSU.
For that price, he could just buy a brand new pre-built cheapy computer with everything new.
Thnx for the suggestion. System crawls when there are too many tabs open , if any pages are graphic heavy , or if multiple tasks are being done. Even opening a photo heavy pdf file takes time and scolling thru is stop and go and never smooth. Having spent 50K on the system several years back, kinda hard to throw it away for a new system. Have Tune up Utilities 2010 , Avira AntiVir Personal and WinPatrol Plus, so no virus/malware.
