I have inspiron 1100, and i'm a ol' game fan. Say I want to play
starcraft, but it only display at 640x480. and dell inspiron 1100 doesn't
support screen expansion thus showing only small screen in the center
boxed in large blank area. So what i'm looking for is this. Is there any
utility that converts 640x480 native resolution software to 1024x768 when
it's being run?

If you're at home, why not hookup a CRT? It'll look a lot better than
if you were able to find the software you are describing.

My monitor is already connected to the other system. i want to avoid the
juggling reconnecting cables, cuz it's so deep inside of a desk.
hope someone drops some software title followup-posting

Unless there is a BIOS setting for screen expansion in the absence of
the setting in the video adapter, you are going to be out of luck.

Another option is a $20-$30 KVM (keyboard, video, monitor) switch.
Make sure the cables are of sufficient length to reach deep inside
your desk. You'll only need to reach deep into the desk once to hook
it up; after that, it'll be easy to connect the monitor to the laptop
and switch computers.
You can hook up both your desktop and laptop to the same CRT monitor
(as well as use your full size keyboard and mouse to control the
laptop).
Here's an eBay auction that closes on 2/5/2005 with no takers so far
($10+$13 US shipping) so you can see what it may like:
(My KVM doesn't have a big box, just wires, & it's switched by a
keyboard combo)
Because your LCD on the laptop has fixed physical characteristics, any
software that will expand a 640x480 screen to your Inspiron 1100
screen size will result in a very blocky image.
