Hey all,

I have a question regarding PPPoE and how it works. I've had to come to a desision of getting SBC YAHOO! DSL as nothing else is availible; or at least at a reasonable price. So, as I've seen, the installation disk comes with a load of crap. So, I was searching on DSL Reports, and stumbled upon mutliple users using PPPoE to connect instead of using the installation disk. Well, I searched for the FAQ there, and stumbled across it, and it sounds easy enough. But one thing, do I need any additional hardware to use PPPoE that isn't provided by SBC, and if not, where do I change login details for PPPoE? I hope you guys can answer my question. As well, you can find the FAQ that I am speaking of here.

Thanks!

PPPoE is the protocol SBC DSL uses to communicate. Your goona use it whether u like it or not, lol. The install disc just goes through the steps neccissary to give you a username/pass to connect your dsl. All you need to get your dsl up and running is a modem which sbc provides.
The easiest way to get around using that disc is just to register online from a friends house or something. Just go to https://sbcreg.sbcglobal.net and it will go through the steps of creating an account for you.
If you recieved one of those new modems from SBC (I think they are speedstream 5200s or something) they are actually very basic routers. You will need to log into it via internet explorer and enter the login info you created on that website. I can't remember exactly what ip the modem uses internally but if you do ipconfig /all from a command prompt it should tell you, it will be the default gateway.
