DVD drive and power supply issue

I am currently undertaking my first build and have hit a speed bump. I do not have my motherboard yet but I have my power supply, case, HDD and dvd drive. I wanted to make sure the power supply was in working order so I did the "paperclip trick" and hooked it up to the case fans and the HDD, with everything showing signs of life. However, when I connect the dvd drive, everything turns off. Somewhere, something is being grounded when I connect to the dvd drive. This happens if it is installed in the case or not. I dont want to get the motherboard and CPU and not be able to install my OS. Any tips?
