I have the same problem with a Compaq Presario that contains an Athlon. I
believe the Athlon has fried part of the motherboard because the screen
works fine in a different PC.

N.B. At least one Windows XP update broke the PowerNow support resulting in
AMD processors running "fast-and-hot" and frying some motherboards as they
went!
