Need Cheap New Computer

Forum CPU & Components : CPUs Need Cheap New Computer

Word :    Username :

Hello,
I was looking to buy a new computer from bestbuy or frys electronics. I know its cheaper online, but I don't have a way to get one online.

I use my computer for playing games like World of Warcraft and Rift so I need a good graphics card. My price range is around 700-800$ max, I just need a tower. I also draw digitally.

Help is appreciated!

Do you want to buy one pre-built from a manufacturer like Dell or HP? Or are you building it yourself?

Pre built is my best option.

Best Option? I dunno about that. Best option is learning how to build yourself and doing it yourself.

That aside, your choices include pre-built from OEMs (Dell, Gateway, HP, etc.) or random dude. Random dude you know, even if you pay him $100 is your best option.

jomoreb says he does custom builds. They'd be much better than OEM computers: http://www.tomshardware.com/forum/ [...] lt-desktop

I don't actually know him so feel free to run his prices by me if you decide to go that route.

I'm really opposed to OEMs because they'll charge you $800 for what you could build better yourself for $450.

It would help if you could buy a graphics card online and install it yourself. It's not going to be great but some tips are:
Look for the biggest PSU you can find. At Best Buy, Dell Inspiron 580 and Asus CM1630 both have 300W PSU's. You can use ATI HD5670's with them.
Don't neglect office stores like Staples, Office Depot and OfficeMax. More stores, more chances to find something on sale which is closer to online price.

That said here's a starting point. There's probably better sales out there but this can be a reference.
Asus - Essentio Desktop / AMD Phenomâ„¢ II X4 Processor / 6GB Memory / 1TB Hard Drive $580

It should have a 300W PSU. Add a 5670 graphics card from newegg. If you're willing to replace the PSU, you could scratch together an even better system.

BTW for comparison a Dell Hexacore AMD with 460W PSU costs $600 online currently.

Office Depot tends to have a lot of really great deals.

find somebody that knows how to custom build a computer. buy the parts and pay the guy $50-75 to put it together for you

post in system builder section with your budget
hopefully somebody gives you an exact parts list
then get the parts
get a decent tech shop or a+ certified builder to build sytem
for you (especially be good if they would let you observe/learn how to do it)
if your budget is $800 for tower alone then budget about a 100 or so for the
builder
It would really be worth it if they would teach you how to do it
then in the future the next build you can do yourself

It would be more work than just going to BesBuy and bring home a box
but worth it in the long run
It is your decision to make based on your willingness to learn

HP Pavilion p6720f

Prices range from $499 for a refurb (at Best Buy) to $520 at Office Depot for a new model with 1-year limited warranty. Being that Office Despot (sic) pretty much sucks, I would suggest checking with Fry's and see if they will price match since they started a $540 special today on the Pavilion p6720f:

The PhIIX4 840T microprocessor is an EO stepping Zosma core (meaning that there are another two cores inside). It also 'turbos' to 3.2GHz. You will not be able to unlock on the HP (at least, I don't think so) but all your components will move forward to AM3+ when you are ready down the road for a new rig.

After taxes you should have around $200 for a video card (and PSU if necessary). Lotsa good options, there.

An hour ago I ventured into Office Clown Depot looking for a 'Zacate' nextbook on an impulse buy. (I've got an ST 64GB UltraDrive SSD that is looking for a home!) They offered two netbooks (one not in stock). I suspect the second was an MSI Wind with an Atom N455 ... but we never got to discuss anything because the second sentence out of the OD Clowns mouth was: "You don't want a netbook; you want an iPhone"

Hilarity ensued:

Me: "But I need a netbook with a hard drive for (interrupted) ..."
OD Clown: "My iPhone has a hard drive ..." (whipping his phone out and not bothering to mention the 'jail break')
Me: "running x86 apps (interrupted) ..."
OD Clown: "and runs faster than a netbook ... "
Me: "on a full version of Win- (interrupted) ... "
OD Clown: "with 8GB of ram and the best phone ..."
Me: "dows with wirele- (interrupted) ..."
OD Clown: "Blah Blah Blah Blah Blah ..."

I think you've got the point  I threw up my hand to stop him, and turned around to walk away. I looked back and said, "You guys need product that folks can use like 'Ontario" and the "Llano platform" when it comes out." And out the door I went! I didn't even bother to call him a dumb arse ...

Today was 'bill paying day' and I was feeling flush with cash after a good month (and ready to contribute significantly to their bottom line). It will be a 'cold day in Hades' before the Clowns at Office Depot see a single nickel of my cash.

:D

For that price range a really good bet is the HPE-560, it has good consumer report reviews and is going to pull alot more weight for the price. Your benefit is it's highly upgradeable as well, in case you ever want to go bigger. It's under $800 too :) http://goo.gl/ZGAvT
