Hi everyone. A couple months ago I scavenged together parts from a dell to make myself a gaming computer (tight budget). It has a core 2 duo e7500, 3 gb ddr2 800, an asus p5n-d, WD caviar blue 320gb, evga gts 450, and a random cd drive. My questions is, what is the best (price considered) cpu in the lga 775 family. I want this system to last a bit longer (after battlefield 3) and need to spruce it up. The cpu is ,y biggestest problem (also looking to get a nother 450 to sli) Any input is helpful. Thank you

Is this your motherboard?

http://usa.asus.com/Product.aspx?P_ID=yQYfAtkxxZMjR79G&content=specifications)#

If so then its saying here that you can have; Core™2 Quad/Core™2 Extreme/Core™2 Duo/Pentium® Extreme/Pentium® D/Pentium® 4

And a 1333/1066/800 MHz FSB

You should go on the CPU support list tab.

If you can overclock that e7500 it would pretty much be a waste of money to buy any other 775 cpu. You're probably looking at something like ~$170 for a quad on the 775 platform which would be a q8400 @ 2.66 ghz. Beyond the q8400 the prices are borderline ridiculous for a 3 gen old platform.

IMO you'd be much better off saving for a new mobo/cpu/ram.

Yeah thats probably my best bet and i will give it a try. How high can I get that chip to without loosing stability? Does my P5n-d support Overclocking? Would my hyper 212+ be enough cooling? Thanks

I wouldn't sink any money into a 775 either just OC....

I had an E8400, 3.5Ghz was easy. Things got a bit dicey around 4Ghz. Settled on 3.8Ghz and ran it for a few years...

On temps, it's only a dual core, I never had any issue with temps during OC'ing.... basic Zalman Cooler

What size power supply do you have? (watts & brand...) Where I'm headed is if your on a tight budget a pair of 450s will take more power and generate more heat and possible cooling problems. When the time comes, sell off the 450 you have and go for a single 560Ti or 570 ....

With 600 watt supply your in good shape.......

http://www.antec.outervision.com/PSUEngine

Single GTS 450 315watts
Dual GTS 450 380watts
Single GTX 560 380watts
Single GTX 570 450watts

NOTE: included OC to 4Ghz too...

I'd still go with a single card to avoid heat & cooling issues. And, if you upgrade your whole system further on down the road an SLI pair of 570's will be viable for several years (certainly Far longer than 450s..)
