i am trying to connect a windows 98SE computer to another comp (win XP sp2) as a client that could surf the internet via ICS (the XP is connected to the internet via cables).

The problem is that i cannot ping any of the computers ...
local ping works on both of them, and the link is on (connected).

when i ( ping the 98se computer ( there only one packet returning, but get the message "request timed out" ..... this happens also when i ping from the 98 to the XP ....
tried replacing the cable, disable & remove FW (norton + XP) but nothing works ...

i'm using EPOX board with 2 LAN port o/b. one of the LAN ports is attached to the cable modem and the other to the second computer (the 98se)....

i donno what 2 do anymore ....

please help ....

So you have one Cat5 network cable strung between the 2 computers? Is it a crossover cable? Unless the 2 computers have gigabit network cards you are going to need a crossover cable to communicate between them.

the computers are connected with crossover cable.

in the meantime i've solved the problem quite simply - i've installed XP on the older machine (300Mhz, 64M RAM), needless to say it's barely working so i'm thinking to migrate to linux ...

anyhow - if u still think u have a solutio for 98 - i'll b glad 2 hear it.

I have the same problem ever since I downloaded XP SP2. I used to be linked via RJ-45 Crossover from Dell 8250 WinXP to Compaq 9660 Win95a. Yep, worked fine for 1.5 years. Even shared an internet connection until I started using AOL 7.0 (but that is another story soon to be solved on 9 Dec with uninstall of that crappy ISP). But I've tried all manual settings on both computers, reinstalled cards/drivers, set manual IP address on Win95 system to be close (one off) from IP address on Win XP system, set the 255.255.255 subnet, set shared everything, set up MS client and services. I'm at a loss. I've turned off all firewalls and even turned off Norton IS all together in the msconfig window. Nothing works to get the two talking together again.

What the heck in XP SP2 has caused the break in communication between the two computers?
