Hello, i have a q9550 and after like 2 min of gameplay my fps drop to around 6 and never recover... i jus installed it (correctly) and set bios on default but when i play games it always happens... thing like web browsing and stuff work jus fine. i had a pentium 4 before this and was able to play dead space, gears of war and grid with no fail... but after upgrading to the q9550 ive had the problem on all of my games

i have a q9550 (stock)
9600 gso
g41-m7 mobo
3gb ddr2

i just find it strange that with a pentium4 @ 3.0ghz gave me better performance than a q9550 @ 2.83 ghz.... any help ?

More about : q9550 pentium

There is something wrong, most likely thermal throttling. Is your cooler properly installed with new thermal paste? Are you monitoring temps?
March 7, 2011 10:59:40 PM

ye and temps hardly ever peak nost is like 60.... its new paste that came with the chip and heat sink

You might have a power issue since it is not heat. What is the amps on the +12volts on that PSU?
March 8, 2011 1:37:03 AM

standard.......i dont hav a clue .... its nothing special its an off the shelf model
March 8, 2011 1:44:06 AM

You seriously need a better Power Supply or you should take out that 9600 GSO and replace it with a 5670, dont go for GT 430 its really underperforming

your P4 performs better cause it needs less power, your C2Q needs alot more power and its being bottlenecked by your PSU, so Get a new psu or get a 5670
March 8, 2011 2:16:10 AM

well i can get a Sapphire Radeon HD5770 FleX 1GB or a Sapphire Radeon HD5750 Vapor-X 1GB... psu i can get no prob but which gpu would u recomend ?

HD5770 and a quality 450watt PSU!
March 8, 2011 6:51:40 PM

kk ima get back to yall in a month or so if i get the parts :D
March 8, 2011 6:55:46 PM

and some feed back... i got a gpu monitor from nvidia and when the sudden drop in fps happens it shows the gpu processor going to idle and my cpu (q9550) @ around 50% usage... mind u while all of this is going on nothing changes.....

gpu clock rate and all stays constant.... the gpu processor jus idles for about a min then recovers :? any thoughts on this now ?
March 8, 2011 8:20:06 PM

1080p always played on it with the pentium 4

Well upgrade your gpu. Gtx 460 or 6850. Then bump the cpu up to over 3Ghz.

You will be set to face any game on your native resolution then.

I think you missed his question. The issue here is that his current setup with the 9600GSO is performing worse than his previous P4 setup with the same 9600GSO.

nail on the head :3 .... tho i might buy the new parts i would like to know why its happening
March 8, 2011 9:41:56 PM

bios updated, chipset also, the fps are constant thru and thru (23 fps in dirt 2) its like a random enigma... jus happens with no warning....
March 8, 2011 9:48:37 PM

none..... i dont roll tht way :3 .... ima try over clocking it... but when i monitor cpu its like 70% usage

yes he needs to overclock his cpu. He's obviously running games that uses only 1 core.

Even if they only use one core, the q9550 should be substantially faster than the P4.
March 8, 2011 10:21:09 PM

god..... i know all about fps and stuff.... what i care to know is why after 2mins of gameplay i get a drop in fps like clockwork then goes back like nothing
March 8, 2011 10:45:32 PM

its like this on all games.. dirt 2, cod 4, league of legends, dead space, nfs shift.... all so dont say "this game is a duo core coded game and this is a quad" they all *** up reguardless of settings.... they go perfect to *** in 2 mins ALL.... help ?

well it ain't. Obviously the higher clocked core was faster. But were both running on the sAME OPERATING SYSTEM?

A single core of a Q9550 is faster than any P4 that has ever been made.

Therefore, if in his system, it isn't, then something is very, very wrong. It's not just a matter of threading (or a need to overclock).

I know you probably already did this, but I should ask anyway:
Did you install the Nvidia drivers?

drivers updated (always are never skip on em)

well he was running the games well on his P4 so the games must be using a single core. He is playing at 1080p so the cpu performance won't make the big difference on the older games.

Op I must ask did you perform a cpu upgrade from P4 to the quad using the same mobo and ram?

The fact that he was running them on a P4 doesn't necessarily mean that the games can only use one core. It does mean that the 9550 shouldn't have any trouble though.

Game runs fine for 2min then it bogs down! No temp issues! Whats left? Power, broken CPU or software issues!
350watt PSU amps +12 volt unknown! 9600GSO recommended PSU (borrowed from guru3d) "A single GeForce 9600 GSO requires you to have a 450 Watt power supply (which we think is the bare minimum for any modern PC regardless of VGA). That power supply needs to have (in total) at least 26 Amps available on the 12 volts rails."

2) What does this have to do with anything?

At least a 430w Corsair would do with a 5770.

Maybe you should try a fresh install of windows. If power and heat aren't a problem, I would say it's a software issue. Especially since the slowdown happens randomly. If it only happens after a restart that would make me almost certain it's software.

I do fresh Installs every year or so to make sure these things don't happen. Windows seems to get buggy after running for long periods of time.
March 11, 2011 1:27:52 PM

would it also help to say this only occurs in newer games.... eg deadspace, dirt 2, bioshock 2, borderlands

but in older games like gta sa, nfs mw, and emulators it doesnt happen ?

Best solution

sounds like games using dx 10 and windows aero. Your gpu ain't cut out for all those combined. GTAiv are cpu intensive. Your gpu is bottlenecking like hell

He used the same OS with both builds; he only changed the processor. He should be getting better FPS or at least the same no matter what(even if the Core 2 quad was using 1 core at 2.83ghz). Core 2 is significantly faster than any Pentium 4 out there clock for clock.

The video card might have been damaged somehow, but it seems weird that it will play for a short time before it stops running optimally. Maybe it's a heat issue that slowly builds up until it stops working, and the older games don't stress the GPU enough to heat it enough to cause the problem.

^In fact I just went and looked at that video you put up again. It shows the GPU at 106C and slowly drops to 104C while you sit on the desktop. That's definitely the problem there! Try having a fan blow directly on the GPU and play a game to see if you ever get the FPS drops anymore.

after a bout a week u have found the answer..... when i got this msg i had jus come home from work (9:25)... i turned the fan staight into my case and set it on max (had my feet frozen -_-) and played dirt till (9:46) with no drop in fps..... temps was reading (95°C) on the gpu...... the card is about 3years old. ive cleaned it out a bouple a times but i guess age and stuff are causeing the heat.. tht coupled with the excessive gaming are putting a toll on it... when i get my 5770 i hope this will be over due to the fact tht it has a bigger heat sink and such

THNX A BUNCH... uve found my problem :D
cookies for you... oh wait.... this site has none :(  oh well thnx anyway

tho one thing tht has me.... if the problem is heat.... then y when i had the p4 i could play dead space (got bored started over) and now i get worse fps (not related to the other prob as far as i kno) fps drop starts @ the begining of the game :/

The P4 might have been holding the card back enough to keep it from throttling, but now the Core 2 is pushing out enough frames to work the card enough to overheat it.

Something else like the heatsink became loose or the fan stopped working might have happened if you're unlucky.

My friend's fan on a 9500GT had stopped turning, and when we pulled it out, we tried to push the fan to see what was wrong. You could barely move the thing! It's sad that a perfectly working card has to get thrown away due to a cheap fan.

i think he meant 5770, and @OP, I still think it might be issue with the PSU, CPU not getting enough power

Except he said he tried it with a different PSU that was 650W, I don't think that would be overloaded with those chips.

well dusted out my gpu and it had a ton of stuff i get like 45-50 idle now and 65 max :D .... sometimes my ignorance astounds me :s

u see between swapping cpus there was a gap (2months) with no games on the gpu (college is a bitch) so i guess it collected stuff and when i wanted to play games it then showed :\

well thnx for all of ur help pplz. wont b 4gotten
