In am shopping for another memory card.
I then saw the name of Verbatim at Staples.
I wonder if they ranked about the same as Sandick, Lexar or others more
popular brands.
TIA

The Staples sales flyer caught my eye too. I think $39.95 [Canadian]
is a good buy for that Verbatim 256Mb SD card. Can't sneeze at $30.00
off.

Verbatim has been around for years. I trust the brand name. Their
CD-RW & CD-R media has been good to me. Verbatim is a subsidiary of
Mitsubishi Chemical.

If you have a Staples retail outlet close by you're okay. Staples.ca
doesn't offer free shipping unless it's a $50.00 minimum order.

In store, Verbatim 256Mb SD card + GST/PST = $45.94

However, for a few dollars more I just ordered while writing this
reply a Kingston Elite Pro [High Speed - 60x] 256Mb SD card. & it was
still cheaper than the most of other guys everyday prices for the
standard write speed stuff.

http://tinyurl.com/5qffs

SoftMagic.ca [no Provincial Sales Tax outside Quebec]

Free shipping for Kingston cards. Delivered $53.69. Not bad. This card
was $5.00 more yesterday. Had to go for it. Order confirmed.

Kingston is a trusted name amongst computer gamers. Quality products.

Last August I paid $84.00 less taxes for the same card. Kingston flash
memory is also used by my local computer retailer dudes who special
ordered my Kodak DX7440 camera. The higher speed memory wasn't all
that much more than standard and we all thought it would make a
difference.

I just rooted through http://www.dpreview.com/ to find that Casio,
Epson, HP, Kodak, Konica Minolta, Panasonic, Pentax, Ricoh, Samsung,
Sanyo and Toshiba all use SD memory.

The future looks promising for SD high speed.

I appreciate the information.
I will have to increase my knowledge of memory cards. I am not familiar
with the speed rating. The Verbatim may well be a regular speed card. I
wonder what I could gain with an ultra speed card? The prices at
SoftMagic.ca are attractive and the delivery is free.
Thanks

I'm sorry if I confused the issue.

If your present SD card is a regular speed stay with that type. The
Verbatim 256Mb at Cdn$39.95 is a very good deal.

Even TigerDirect.ca can't beat that price because of their UPS
shipping rates.

Most of todays digital cameras won't gain anything by using higher
speed cards. See a follow-up reply by Eric Gill at end if interested
in why.

I'm matching high speed SD cards because I found another Kingston
Elite Pro 256Mb at a bargain price.

The Kodak DX7440 is my first digital camera. It was a best bang for
the buck beating out cameras costing twice the price. I was well
within my budget by $300.00 and I didn't mind buying the fastest SD
card available not knowing it wouldn't make any difference.

But, I'm so impressed with digital I want more. I'm rationalizing
the second high speed card because within a year or two I plan to move
up to a more advanced level of camera. It will probably be capable of
using my faster SD cards. They may lack in capacity by that time but
they will still be useful.

The particular camera body you have will not, no. It is, in fact,
notoriously slow, even for consumer-grade cameras.

>> Sandisk Ultra II's have caught my attention with write speeds of 9.0
>> MB/sec.
>>
>>Hap

But the fastest actual speeds anyone is going to get with any present
camera bodies is much slower.

As an illustration:

http://www.robgalbraith.com/bins/m [...] p?cid=6007

These are all SLRs, but it makes the point. I use Ultra IIs. On my 10D
body, top performance is 1.317MB/sec. On my 20D, it's 5.654MB/sec
(quite a noticeable difference, BTW). The 10D is a great example -
shove the most expensive cards you can get into it, and you get a few
precent difference. Not worth the money in my mind, unless you plan to
upgrade.

The only body that comes close to actually using all the bandwidth
promised is the brand new and uber-expensive Canon EOS-1Ds Mark II.

Oliver:

Thanks for the link. It's the thought that counts. ;-)

ZipZoomfly.com is located in Newark, CA.

I haven't ordered anything from the US for many years. Here's why.

Sandisk 256MB Ultra II SD card US$39.95. Yes, nice card.

Shipping to Canada: UPS Expedited US$45.42. No other choice(s).

US$39.95
45.42
-------
US$85.37

Universal Currency Converter http://www.xe.com/ucc/

Cdn$105.26 - SD card + UPS shipping
8.42 - 8% GST [Federal Goods & Services Tax]
5.00 - to collect GST at time of delivery
--------
Total$118.68 Canadian

Thanks again. Your help was appreciated.

Back in the BBS days, Verbatim were just about the only floppy we'd
trust for anything critical...

Yes, but how does that make them any better or worse than any other
supplier as a provider of memory cards which have no magnetic or optical
content? I would not be surprised if they are simply rebadging cards,
just like most of the other suppliers.

I'm very impressed. That's the fastest delivery I have ever seen. My
ordert was shipped by ground all the way from Montreal, QC to my home

Keep Softmagic.ca in mind. They sell digital cameras. Good prices.

Righjt now the athority on memory cards is the Rob Galbraith site.
www.robgalbraith.com. He has tested many memory cards and their interaction
with all repeat all the major DSLRs on the market. It is a very informative
site.

Since I had to update the firmware on my digital camera I am a little
careful about memory card. One of the reason for updating the firmware was
to: Fixes an issue with some files being corrupted when using SD cards.
At that time I had a sandisk 256 card. The lithium battery was discharging
at an abnormal rate. They never told me what was wrong with the
architecture of the camera and the exact cause of the corruption. Now the
camera is back from the repair center and its working well.
