The i7 950 has a large performance bonus over any Phenom for sale at the moment but if you are gaming at 1920 x 1080 I think anything over a 955BE @ 3.8GHz + a 570 will give a noticeable increase in performance as you should b able to max out all games and get good FPS. I have a 550BE unlocked to 4 cores and overclocked to 3.7GHz + 2 x 512Mb Radeon 4870s in crossfire and I can play all the games I have at ultra settings at 1920x1080.
The i7 950 should work well with any number of x58 boards; I currently use biostar or msi; some prefer asus. Choose your ram carefully in threes. Microcenter ocassionally has the 950 for $199, if you live near one. If you want to save some money, the 955 phenom II is priced right but not as fast as the i7. It will work with your 4 sticks of ram. The gigabyte GA880-UD3H would be a great choice for features ($110 at newegg).

Yeah i have a extra msi nf750-g55 mobo laying around amd sli lol love it. but how much of a preformance diffrence does a i7-950 have over amd. Also its funny because my dad has a 9850 be,h50,8gb ddr2 ram,gtx 465. and he play fallout 3 and new vegas at max settings and it doesnt lag. makes me wonder about thinks they said the new phenoms were much better then the first i agree but the 9850 is a soild cpu. it out preforms any of the athlon 2 and lower phenom 2's
