Side speakers not working win 7

Hello,
I have an interesting problem. I'm currently running Win 7, and the side speakers wont work for all programs...

When I configure the speakers and test them, the sound just fine. But when I have programs running (itunes, win media player, computer games, internet browser, etc.) the side speakers are quiet...

All the levels are balanced at 0, and sound levels are at 100%

Again, when I test them using the configure option, they make noise, but don't respond to programs.

Any ideas??

Currently running:
win 7 64 bit
3.0ghz AMD quad
8G ram
ATI radeon hd 5700
speakers - edifier: m1550

I would first try to reinstall the sound drivers for your chipset and the audio program example--realtek

Music that is encoded in Stereo (2.0) will only output two channels without upmixing/matrixing. That explains Itunes, WMP, and your internet browser.

Games should be outputting 5.1 though...any games in particular you've tested with?

Have you tried speaker fill in your audio software.
