my gx280 frequently stalls and the cpu runs at 100%. my question is there a cure for this or is there a suggested mother board up grade available?

The Optiplex uses Dell proprietary motherboards and connectors. Other than installing a more capable Optiplex motherboard, you really can't upgrade the system very much. You can max out RAM and add a more capable video card (assuming your PSU is up to the task).

A great source for Dell parts is www.txcesssurplus.com. Good luck!

Not really, in fact, you would only be able to connect another Dell (proprietary) heatsink/fan assembly to the Optiplex motherboard. You might be able to put one of the XPS heatsinks on the Opty, but your fans and shrouds may not line up properly.

What CPU does your system have installed?

Yep, that is a hot one. You can clean your system and make sure the fan is working properly, but your options are VERY limited. Might just be time for a new system.
