I'd appreciate any pointers and suggestions at what notebooks I should
evaluate.

I'm looking for an ultra-small notebook to basically replace my travel DVD
player and MP3 player that I'll also use for e-mail etc. I'm not on a tight
budget. In terms of priority in order it's.

MUSTS

As small a footprint as possible - thickness isn't an issue
Video output so I can connect it to a TV
Must have integral DVD player
Large HD minimum 80gig but prefer over 100gig

NICE TO HAVES

Good battery or additional battery possible
Integral wifi would be good
XP or media centre

Any help and pointers appreciated

First of all, there are no 2.5 hard drives over 100 gigs. 80 gigs is
feasible, the 5k80 Hitachi is a nice drive. I'd go for a JVC or a SOny
mini-notebook.

I think the JVcs have all that the Sony certainly does

Thanks Stavros, very much appreciated.

Both Sony and JVC appear to have 40gig drives as standard, and whilst I
could cope with 80 or possibly 60 - 40 just isn't enough. It's a shame they
don't supply these with larger drives as a standard option. Neither appear
to take an additional 40gig as well as the one packaged - and I guess your
suggestion would involve reinstalling XP on a new drive. I think that that
would be too much trouble!

Any more ideas appreciated.

These machines are designed as auxiliary computers, not main computers.

Why on earth do you need so much disk space, anyway? How many MP3s do
you really need to carry with you?

You need to do some more homework. What you're describing as your "must
needs" doesn't exist.

When you get into mini-notebooks you soon find that the smaller they become,
the more they've given up in terms of "accessories" and extended features.

Many of the latest minis have reduced their overall footprint by giving up
an internal optical drive, using 1.8" vs. 2.5" HDs (and are therefore
limited to 40GB capacity), and other features.

So I believe you need to re-evaluate your desire for an "ultra-small" laptop
and have a look at the offerings from the majors and decide on what form
factor would be the largest you'd find acceptable.

Regards,

James

Seconded, the P7010 would be great for what the OP is trying to do;
-DVD writer
-small widescreen
-takes 2.5" HDs so it can go up to a 100gig drive (there are some 4200rpm
drives in that size, but 5400rpm is better if you want the laptop to seem
fast)
-It looks like it's got both s-video and VGA out, wireless and even
firewire.

I really don't know of any other laptop that is this small and so well
featured.

There's even a small forum dedicated to them:

Chris/a smith,

Thanks very much for the pointers. I visited the Fujitsu website earlier
but found the range difficult to penetrate - but revisited. The P7010C
looks ideal.

Thanks for your trouble again.

The Sony T series is a great choice and the Fujitsu 7000 series is good
too. However the need for a large HD is going to be the biggest problem
for you. The largest drives that these ultra-lights have are 40 GB HDs.
You could purchase a 100 GB HD but that's going to come at a big
premium for you. You will of course have to re-install the OS and there
is rarely a capacity for a second drive so you're out of luck there.
Both the Fuji and the Sony come in at below 4 lbs with internal optical
drives. Also, you're looking at $2100+ for either of these machines and
the 100 GB drives are going for a bit over $200.

I found that the Fujitsu has been reworked a bit and now offers an 80
GB HD too.

I have a 80 G drive in my 16 month-old Fujitsu P5020D (P7000 is the current
incarnation of this machine.)
You can have any Fujitsu laptop configured to your needs/wants if you buy from a
reputable source (I got mine from Portable One.)

Take a look at a Panasonic W2 or a Fujitsu T70. Not cheap in the US but
seems to have most of what you want. Footprint is not as small as a Sony
U-series but the U-series doesn't have the other requirements you need.

Thanks John,

The pany w2 seems to have 40 gigs versus the Fujitsu's 7010 80 gig and is
also a bit bigger on the foot[print. The fuji also plays a wider range (+
and -) DVD's so seems all in all to be the better bet.

Thanks,

The W2 I was looking at has 80 gig but that's a Japanese-market model
imported by Dynamism and you pay a bit of a premium for their services.

Thanks, I've just ordered the Fujitsu 7010 which seems to fit the bill -
but costs (in the uk) an arm and a leg.
