I am getting money to build a computer for Christmas and have been saving up for a while. My budget is going to be around $350-$400. I just want it to be a mid-range gaming system and I already have a hard drive and cd drive. Thanks to anyone who can help.

what size (and possibly speed and interface type) is the hard drive? do you need a monitor? operating system? speakers? keyboard & mouse?

Off the top of my head, I'd suggest an Athlon II X2 250, or X3 450, 4 GB of RAM, a GTS 450, and an inexpensive, but relible PSU and case

It should run $400ish for that setup.

Sorry this is my first post and do not know how to post very well obviously.
The hard drive I have is a 500 gb 7200.
I have a monitor.
Have my operating system already.
I have speakers.
I am set with the keyboard and mouse.

ok, since you already have those parts:

Prices are newegg, and off the cuff.

AS Rock 770 motherboard ($60)
Athlon II X3 450($79)
4 GB DDR3-1333 ($45)
Coolermaster Elite 310 with Elite 460W Power Supply ($70)
Palit GTX 460 1 GB: ($155)
use your existing parts for HDD, DVD burner, etc: $0

$409 total
