TV Tuner Newb Question: Is a cable box to TV tuner not a true option?

So I just built a pc more or less to play one or two games (my first pc in years), but I have a wonderful monitor and an unnecessarily large secondary hard drive. Thus, I fell in love with the idea of being able to maybe use it to also watch TV (i.e. Saturday football) while reading or studying in my office.

I have done tireless research and have cleared up much of my confusion. I understand that I can get clear QAM straight from the wall (dozens of stations in my area according to silicon dust's site), but it seems like I should be able to easily hook up a card to my extra box as if hooking up a tv. I tried with a hauppage card with pretty lame results.

Is it possible to get a computer to act just like a tv hooked up to my box? What are my options re: connections that would give me the best HD? This topic has frustrated me more than any computer related research I've done. I just have zero experience and your input is appreciated immensely.

This product will do what you need:

Hauppage HD PVR

It will pull component video from your cable box.
