Would a new motherboard increase gaming performance over a stock board in a pre built hp machine? (p6610f) I know bus speed is very important on a motherboard, I figured that would be what should hold me back from upgrading processors to one with more core and a higher clock speed.

The Performance difference that you would get from the motherboard alone would probably not justify the price. Usually the difference is no more than a couple of percentage points. Also, 4 cores is plenty for most games right now. Instead get a faster CPU, such as a Phenom II X4 955, and/or a faster GPU such as a Radeon HD 6850/6870/6950 or Nvidia 560 Ti/570.

What kinds of games are you looking to play and what is the maximum resolution of your display? Also, are you wanting to max out frame rates and detail settings?
