Hi,

I am planning on getting a GTX 460 (768MB or the 1GB version). I have a 19" LCD monitor 1440*900 resolution. I am not planning to upgrade the monitor.

Should I get a motherboard that has SLI support or is one GTX 460 enough for playing all the games at that resolution with the highest possible settings.

Getting a Motherboard that has SLI capability isnt going to cost much more than one that dosent. I would get one just in case you do get a bigger monitor at any time.
There are a few games that wont play at the very highest settings but i wouldnt think knocking a couple of detail settings down a bit will ruin the experiance.
Get a SLI board and a single 460 then if your not happy get a second.

Mactronix :)

Upgrading your motherboard depends on what you already have. If your RAM, CPU, etc. will all be compatible with the new motherboard, then your upgrade would just be the cost of the motherboard + GTX460. If you need to get all those other components, then the cost goes up considerably.

You will be able to play just one GTX460 mostly on maxed out settings at that resolution, but you may need to adjust settings for some games. The 1gb version is higher performing significantly, but it won't be a slam dunk for all your games. Maybe try the video card first in your existing motherboard, then decide if you need to upgrade to SLI.

The thing is I currently have a pentium D 2.8 GHZ with 3GB DDR2 800MHZ ram. So its a pretty old socket that is LGA 775.

As I already have 3GB DDR2, I would just like to upgrade the motherboard, processor and the graphics card. So any suggestions. Please suggest a DDR2 motherboard and should I go with AMD or Intel.

Cost wise, honestly, there's not much point in replacing all but the RAM.

4GB of DDR3 is like $90- $100, sure. But your new GPU, Motherboard, and CPU could be about the same price whether you do an Intel i5-760 ($$190-200)with P55 board ($150?), or an older and more rare 775 Socket SLI board plus a quad core.

Replacing your CPu and motherboard, in my opinion, would be an entire waste of money unless you're actually progressing to a new socket type for the faster, newer generation CPUs. Could you get a cheaper 775 board, and find the cheapest 775 CPU? Yes. But it'd sorta be throwing good money after bad.

Also consider whether you need a Power Supply update as well.

This isn't the best motherboard but it would work:

Intel Based System:

Biostar T5 $126

I5-750 @ $195

4GB (2x2GB) DDR3-1333 Mushkin $69

Sparkle GTX 460 1GB $209

Total $599

Note: With your current monitor, the GTX 460 768MB is cheaper, and all you would need. If however, you want a better monitor in the next year or so, I'd get the 1GB version.
