Core i3 550 vs amd Phenom II x2 560

What would you prefer among these two
1. Core i3 550 3.2GHz Socket 1156 Boxed Processor BX80616I3550

2. Phenom II X2 560 Black Edition Boxed Processor

Both priced at $99

I use Debian Squeeze as OS. I am not sure whether the motherboard support for Linux of AMD and Intel matters.

Thanks.

It takes an AMD Triple core to beat the i3. I would strongly suggest that you look into linux support for the motherboard your interested in. No sense getting stuck with onboard devices that wont work due to a lack of linux drivers.
  2. Yes, the i3 would be better, unless you can unlock the Phenom II, but you have about a 1/3 chance of that. I cast my vote for an i3.
  3. The AMD Phenom will overclock very well without paying out the arse for water cooling. Should easily be able to hit 4GHz on air. Stock for stock though, the i3 is faster.

4ghz AMD core = 3Ghz Intel core. So dual core intel i3 vs. dual core AMD Phenom II X2 the i3 will win.
  5. Why not a new Sandy Bridge i3? Here is the i3 2000 vs 6 core 1055T Thuban. i3 kills it in gaming.

Dual cores will be bad soon and not provide enough cores. Also, I would get a cheaper p55 MoBo and an older i3 so I could actually OC it. No OCing with the new ones unless they are a 'k' series chip.
  7. thank you for your valuable feedback.. I ended up getting i5 Sandy Bridge for additional $25 ... thanks again
  8. thanks.. I ended up getting Sandy Bridge, but i5 for additional $25
