Cannot set to native resolution

Hello,
I have just reinstalled windows vista business after a nast virus/rootkit attack. My problem now is that I cannot set the monitor to the native resolution, ie the default monitor is 1024 x 768 pixels, this leaves a black area about 2cm wide down each side of my screen. How do I get the windows to recognise that this laptop (HP) has a larger monitor size?

You need to install the right drivers for the VGA and set the display type as Laptop Flat Panel. Also check out the BIOS of the Laptop to make sure that the screen setting and VGA settings are correct.
