Hey guys, so my desktop crashed a while back and I've finally now gotten around to reformatting the HD. The system its self is quite outdated so I was looking for a few upgrades to keep it up to par. Here are the current specs from my memory:

Core 2 Duo at 2.13Ghtz
2gb DDR2 800
500gb HD
Nvidia 8600GTS
And a really awful motherboard that doesn't support overclocking...

The upgrade budget is $350 max, im not a hardcore gamer anymore but I do enjoy the beautiful graphics games are able to produce these days.

Here is what I have selected so far from newegg, please any comments or other suggestions is welcome.

SAPPHIRE Toxic 100315TXSR Radeon HD 6850 1GB 256-bit GDDR5 PCI Express 2.0 x16
GeIL Black Dragon 4GB (2 x 2GB) 240-Pin DDR3 SDRAM DDR3 1066 (PC3 8500)
MSI P43-C51 LGA 775 Intel P43 ATX Intel Motherboard

I'd personally forgo the temptation to buy a new MB just to use the same 5 yr old CPU which is about 1 GHz behind...(albeit still a fine system for Fear, Doom, Quake 4, etc....)

The system is still sound, just perhaps not for Crysis at 2560x1600....

Wait for the new SandyBridge socket cpu/mainboards, 1155, due out in a few weeks....; as for video cards, I'd opt for the recently released 6950 or 6970. (Better yet, a pair of them!) By mid-Jan, we should see SLI/Crossfire benchmarks on a variety of games.....

Well for the processor situation, you guys thing that would be able to safely overclock to 3.0ghtz? This is my first true attempt at overclocking, just wondering if that thing is stable at thoes speeds.

Each CPU has a mind of its own, some might OC well others may not.

Whats your monitors rez ? The build i posted is 344 and will play the games out today with good FPS some you might need to set to high setting vs very high settings.the mobo has a core unlocker so the 3 core CPU could become a quad core and you can OC it to 3.5 easy.

I run at 1920x1080. While some people seek 60+ fps in games on max 40 is perfectly fine for me. Also Ive read its a gamble weather or not the core will unlock or not, I hear they can become unstable. Like I said im not a hardcore gamer looking for insane over the top performance, I just want to enjoy modern games at decent frame rates. I hardly ever run any AA as it destroys frame rates on the resolution I play at.
