Which CPU combo is better?

Phenom II X4 965 BE + Gigabyte GA-MA78LMT mATX for $162.36
or
Phenom II X4 840 + " for $108.24?
I'm upgrading from a Athlon 64 X2 4800+ 2.5 GHz, so I'm sure both of these are going to blow me away. There are other motherboards i can pair either with, like the ASUS M4N68T-M V2 or the ASUS M4A78LT-M LE. However the last one can only be paired with the 840. This is for a budget gaming build. I would buy either one, but which one is going to give me more bang for my buck?
