ATI 6870 Power Supply Question

The ATI 6870 require two 6pin power connections. I may have made an error with my purchase. Yesterday I purchased two of these cards and a power supply. I'm wondering if this power supply now has enough 6pin connectors to power two ATI 6870's. If in fact it doesn't what are my options? Return the power supply? This is my first computer build.

  2. If you get one like this - HIS 6870 - if you look at the items that are included pic you'll see 2 Molex to 6 pin adapters which you can use for them -- I'd use one 6 pin PCI-e connector and 1 of the molex to 6 pin adapters on each card with your PSU and you should be fine !

I will be ok? The HIS 6870 comes included with an addon for the 2 smaller pin connectors converting them into 6 pin connection? I did in fact purchase the HIS 6870 model.

Bumping your thread like this is not advisable. :non:
  5. What CPU do you have? I wont trust the M700 with dual 6870s, an i7 and a hefty OC.

  7. I would change a few things but you already bought it so it doesn't matter. Sounds like you should be fine tho with using 2 power adapters. make sure you use 1 6pin pci-express power adapter on each card. Don't use 2 on one card and the adaptors on another card.

  8. So you are running 6870 in CF?

So essentially its like running a 5970 with a Phenom 955

    Talk about CPU bottleneck :P

^ If he OCs it a bit, he should be just fine.

Anyway, the PSU you used, its fine... I use it and its a pretty decent PSU, really though, it is quiet. It also powers a heavily OC'd system fine. But yeah... I wouldn't actually trust it to power a 4ghz 950/930/920 + 2 480 kind of setups, but with your setup, even after a oc on the 955 (like mine) and 2 6870 you should be fine.

How high would you recommend Over Clocking the CPU? I was not planning on over clocking, will I need a CPU cooler better than the stock heatsink?
  11. Yea you would. But the 955 stock heatsink isn't garbage. You'll probably get up to like 3.5 or 3.4 on the stock heatsink. But... Might be a bit hot though. If you did get a heatsink best budget heatsink is the Hyper 212+. You'll OC it up to 4ghz no problem on that.

  12. I read the sticky about over clocking. Honestly it made me confused with configuring the setting to the memory and volts. Before this week I have never thought about over clocking let alone building my own PC. Can i simply over clock my cpu during the start up screen? How did you over clock your system aznshinobi? Do you mind explaining if it is not that much trouble? It seems are systems are alike somewhat

  14. Well OCing AMD chips are really not that hard. Mainly because the unlocked multi. You can use either the BIOS or AMD Overdrive. Many people say overdrive is garbage. But... a minor oc with overdrive is pretty easy. Its just major ones are hard. Overdrive is an AMD made program to allow you to OC in windows without clicking delete (entering BIOS) to tweak voltages. So all that stuff can be done with over drive.

Now i am a Bios man so... I like BIOS better imo. Where you set your ram timings and such, well thats how my BIOS is laid out, is where you OC your cpu. You'll up multi until you get it to a certain clock you like. Then go into windows and test it out with prime95. If its a no go. Go back into bios and up the voltages. From what I've noticed, you'll probably get up to 3.4 or 3.5 on stock voltages. If you plan to aim for 3.8-4.0ghz you'll hafta up the voltages. This is a VERY rough overview of OCing so... just tweak around.
  15. Haha it is nice Tom's has a subject dedicated to over clocking. I'll have to read a bunch of threads but I'll be ok :D I'm excited... I am already learning how to build a computer.
