I'm looking to build a new computer with the sound card, Asus Xonar Essence STX, but I would also like to use the same computer to record vocals and music. I've decided on the E-Mu 1212M.

Would there is a problem in having both of these cards running in my computer?

I'm assuming that since one is dedicated for output and one is dedicated for input, it should be okay.

should run but
you would have to go into control panel-sound options
to change inputs and outputs
create a shortcut for sound options on desktop
that is how i switch between onboard and xonar
i record guitar, vocals, keyboard so I switch inputs as needed

There shouldn't be any problems, though its POSSIBLE there may be a driver conflict. I know ASUS cards tend to play well with other devices, but can't comment on E-Mu.

As above.

Should be ok in Vista or 7, but I'm not sure about XP.

Yes it will work. Go into the windows control panel for sounds and tell it to always use the original sound card. You recording app will most likely specifically use an ASIO driver for the EMU device. Windows junk will route to the old card, recording app will own the EMU.

I'm currently using onboard sound and an audigy, simultaneously. Works very well in windows 7, using one for my headset(ventrilo) and another for music.

awesome feedback. p.s. I'm running windows 7.

I got both cards in the mail yesterday, and here's what I did:

I made sure I uninstalled and disabled my onboard sound and installed the Asus sound card. Works fine. I figured if I have a dedicated sound card, I would have no use for my onboard.

I then installed the E-Mu sound card and in control panel, I specified the output/input.

Ventrilo/Skype works fine. I have no driver issues yet (hopefully not ever).

My recording is pretty weird. It sounds very muted, but I'm assuming it's a problem with my mic since everything else sounds okay. I'll just rma the mic.

Thanks.
