This isn't necessarily something I'm going to build, but recently I was having the old PC vs Console argument with a friend and he challenged me to build a PC that was superior to a PS3 that had the same price (300 dollars) and also a Blu-Ray player. Well, I'm presenting the challenge to you, the Toms Hardware community! Eager to see your results...thanks in advance!

IMO, for $300 I'd just use a console.. you won't be able to play games with the eye candy turned up at 1080p with $300.
You'd have to turn down the settings and play at low res.
PC gaming is way more competitive and you can control everything much better (more buttons).
The only good thing about consoles is you can play any game that comes out for them, because all PS3 games are going to be played on the same exact machine.

for plying games? you can put together a $400 PC that blows the PS3 away in stats. Look at the HTPCs that were built in the article today.

PC vs. Console isn't really an argument when playing games. PC users stomp console gamers when (rarely) they get paird against each other for this exact comparison.

Comparing functionality of a Console vs PC... Are you only talking about the ability to play games and Blu-ray movies? If so, that is pretty limiting to the PC...

CPU + MB => $95

4GB DDR3 => $40

Blu-Ray Reader => $40

500GB HD => $50

550W PSU => $45

Case => Cheap! Go used / Craigs List..
Win7 OS license => $100

$365 goes a long ways, but as Vindictive says your frame rates will be low on a budget machine like this using onboard video.

If the $300 includes a (legit) Windows license, then there is no way it can be done.

OTH, if your friend insists the PC play games and blu-ray, turn it around and insist his PS3 play mkv's without a media streamer like PlayOn running on a PC, edit pictures and videos, manage business accounting, write a term paper, etc. etc.

A PS3 is a toy, a PC is a tool.

The PC can play the toy role if needed, however.

Total=$317.89.

$18 over budget but there is a $25 rebate from the power supply + graphics card combo in there that i didnt include in the price. you could also just use 2gb ram instead of 4 to bring the price down further.

I see nothing in the original post that says all of the parts have to be new and unused.

A $300 dollar playstation has more than $300 of hardware in it (at least when first released). They have to sell the thing at a loss in the early days.

The PlayStation 3's initial production cost is estimated to have been US$805.85 for the 20 GB model and US$840.35 for the 60 GB model. However, they were priced at US$499 and US$599 respectively, meaning that every unit was sold at an estimated loss of $250, contributing to Sony's games division posting an operating loss of US$1.97 billion in the fiscal year ending March 2007.
