I know this topic has perhaps been done to death, so sorry for this
posting.
I'm not interested in web authoring at all, but this software must be
able to do the following:
(1) Create slideshows on VCD, SVCD & DVD
(2) Have some transition effects between slides.
(3) Have the facility for multiple menus for several slideshows.
(4) Have multiple music tracks in each slideshow.
I've looked at many that will handle VCD only (such as Jasc Photo Album
4 & 5), but the picture quality isn't that flash in the end.
I've been looking at Photo2Dvd Studio 3.0 at
http://www.photo-to-dvd.com which looks ideal at around $49. I've given up hope of finding
Freeware/Shareware that'll do the job, so I'm wondering what other
folks are using or like.
I'd love to hear from you on this.

I just downloaded and installed Picasa from Google this week and it is
great, haven't delved too deeply into all it's functions, but free and I
love it.

You may want to look at Adobe Photoshop Elements 3, I think they still
have a trail version available. I don't think it is exactly what you want,
but I am not all that sure as I have not played too much with that part of
it yet.

I've been using Ulead's Picture Show 2 and it does a fairly good job of what
you're looking for. There may be a newer version out.

iPhoto combined with iDVD in the latest ILife packag (so many 'i's!)
will do most of what you want with no problem.
