Core i7 2600k (OC) Setup

Hello all. I plan on purchasing a 2600k setup. The only problem is that I'm not entirely sure what kind of motherboard and RAM I should get. I'm looking for a gaming rig that's gonna last me for at least 2 years. This computer is going to be on practically 24/7. I plan on overclocking, but I'm not sure how that factors into my computer usage time. Most likely I'll just buy an aftermarket heatsink. Considering all the reports I hear on how well it overclock on stock heatsinks, I'm assuming an aftermarket heatsink will take care of any worries I might have leaving my computer on 24/7.

Anyways, all these chipsets with the 1155 make things a bit confusing. I thought it would be helpful to ask you guys - should I wait for the Z68 chipset? Will the benefits help me as an avid gamer? Or should I just get a P67?

Then there's also the case of RAM. I heard anything above 1333 is useless. Is this true? If so, what kind of low latency RAM should I shoot for?

By the way, money isn't a real concern.

  1. I won't be upgrading for some time, and I really want to future-proof my machine. A 2600k for a mere $100 more isn't a big issue for me.
  2. I forgot to mention I'll be doing some video and photo editing on the side. Although, mostly, it'll be used for gaming.
  3. If the $100 is not a big issue, get the 2600K. I did that, for the same reason, but I would have been just as happy with a 2500K

    As to leaving the pc on 24/7, it will downclock to 1.6 if there is nothing to do. If you are folding, or some such, then it will run at max, and a good cooler will help.

    DDR3-1600 is about right. There is little real application difference with faster speeds or better latencies.
    Fancy heat spreaders are mostly marketing.

    P67 is good. Z68 gives nothing to gamers.

    I would get an aftermarket cooler up front. Your PC will run quieter and cooler. It will OC higher and easier.

    A good value cooler is the CM hyper 212 for $30 or so.

    For the best. look at prolimatech megahalems, or noctua NH-D14.

    For gaming, spend your budget on the best graphics card you feel comfortable buying. A GTX580 is not too much.
  4. For editing, check the programs that you use. Some can make good use of lots of ram. If so, get a 16gb kit instead of 8gb. Ram is relatively cheap.
  5. I recall something about the Z68s being able to use the onboard graphics within the processor in conjunction with the discrete graphics card. Or was it just the third-party software?

    Intel sure didn't make this *** easy.
  6. P67 can oc a K cpu but not use the cpu graphics. H67 can use the cpu graphics, but not OC the K cpu. Z68 can do both.
