Bios loses sata HDD after first boot

OK, here is the sequence: Connect power, start boot, BIOS recognizes HDD, Vista starts to load but locks up to "black screen". Reboot and now the BIOS cannot recognize the HDD (SATA). Pull plug, turn on power, enter BIOS - now it recognizes the HDD but the sequence starts over again. So the BIOS is losing the HDD on the SECOND boot each time. Anybody know what could be happening?

Just to update. The HDD died completely the next day. It was just a symptom of the hard drive failing.

Not under warranty. It was a Seagate refurb and the warranty was very limited. I got a little more than a year out of it without problem - then this. I just ended up putting a old HDD that I had laying around into the machine. Seems to be running fine now. Thanks again!
