trying to save on spending on a i7 build i was wondering if the core 2 quad q8400 was good enough for an upgrade for like 2 years to replace my core 2 dual e6580

hmm...it couldnt potentially be with a nice overclock..but not unless you can get that for a very good price..it may actually cost about 200 at some places..your best bet is too get an i5 2500k or i52400, and a decent motherboard ...shouldnt cost you more than $350 and is well worth it I assure you

Unless you are running an LGA 775 socket, it isn't worth an upgrade to the Q8400 for gaming. Actually for gaming, the E8400 on the LGA 775 socket would be better for gaming.

You would be better served going with an Athlon II X3 455 on an AM3/AM2+ setup for it's cost to performance ratio.

^ True enough the athlon would serve your needs..but for a little additional cash..you could have a sandy bridge build that will perform exceptionally well for gaming for 2+ years...it's really not expensive either
