Advice on an upgrade .... from athlon xp (really)

I am doing an upgrade (which in my case means, I`d keep my case and a couple of HHDs only) so I`d appreciate some advice.

Well first my current system is AthlonXP PR2200+ with 512MB PC133 :D .
Yes! I had it for 8 years now and since I rarely sit in front of the PC at home it used to do its job perfectly till recently (web, office, viewing images and videos, web conferencing). The only thing that makes me replace this PC is that playing flash videos on youtube is almost impossible at resolutions higher than 360.

Anyhow I am mentioning this as a reference point to what I need from a PC. So I am thinking of getting the following (please add your imput on that):

1 Things I will keep
- case (I have a pretty ugly but functionally good case)
- power supply: I have some generic 450W power supply (X-supply swtiching PSU 450W). Seems to be working just great.
- one of my old HDDs (PATA) + a working a almost neve used DVD+-RW (PATA)

2. Things I`ll buy (straight off fromt he system builder dec'10):
- ASRock M3A770DE AM3 AMD 770 ATX AMD Motherboard

- Mushkin Enhanced Essentials 4GB (2 x 2GB) 240-Pin DDR3 SDRAM DDR3 1333

- AMD Athlon II X4 640 Propus 3.0GHz Socket AM3 95W Quad-Core Desktop Processor ADX640WFGMBOX

- SAMSUNG Spinpoint F4 HD322GJ/U 320GB 7200 RPM SATA 3.0Gb/s 3.5" Internal Hard Drive -Bare Drive

I have a huge dilema ove what VGA card to get. I`d really like this system to keep staying quiet but in the same time I do plan to process a huge pile of home dvds, so you advice here would be really really appreciated.

I am thinking to get this one
GIGABYTE GV-R455D3-512I Radeon HD 4550 512MB 64-bit DDR3 PCI Express 2.0 x16 HDCP Ready Video Card

Once aing to sum up: system will be used to watch videos, youtube, photo viewing + occasional editing, office applications, edit, organize and encode home DVDs.

What are your thoughts.

More about advice upgrade athlon really
  1. Your plan looks good even the Video card will do what you ask of it although if you are into HD video then the newer HD5550/70 cards do a better job.
  2. ditch that old power supply. x-supply sounds like a rather generic brand, and when you factor in age..

corsair builder series 430CX, should be around 30 or 40USD. great power supply for your setup with plenty of juice for a larger vid card down the road
  3. Thanks a lot.
Well, I guess I could throw in an extra 40$ for a new PSU.
As for HD videos... I personally don`t think it is worth the fuss but soon there would be nothing else so if this VGA card is adequate fine, if not I migh take your advice on a the better one.

By t he way what do you thing about this MoBo TH seems to favor it a lot and back in the day when I was good at assembling PCs the only component I did not save money on was the MoBo as in the long run this is what made up for the PC performance as well as its ability for upgrade
