I have a Dell Inspiron 8200 with an integrated Broadcom wireless card. I am not sure the exact model #. I pick up the wireless connection but have poor recpetion. There is an extra plug on the card itself that says AUX ANT (which I take to mean an auxillary attenea).
Does anyone know how I can find an auxillary attenea for this card or a way to hook up another attenea so I can get better reception?
Yes, there are many possibilities for an additional antenna. You could even make one yourself if you feel like tinkering. If you want a quick omnidirectional boost for your wireless there are many avaliable, just find out what plug your laptop's wifi card has and get an antenna with that connection on it's pigtail. I have never heard of an integrated wifi card having an external antenna plug but if it is anything like most pcmcia cards it is likely a lucent plug. You can find antennas at most major online retailers, just search for antennas. Look in your laptops manual or something to find out exactly what type of interface your laptop has for an antenna before you buy anything, it may end up being some dell proprietary thing
For wireless laptop cards you usually have a couple of choices for the connector. MC or MMCX. There is also a MCX connector. You also have to worry about the polarity of the connector and if it is male of female. So as mentioned you really need to determine what type of connector you have on the laptop. If it is a dell card it is probably a rebadged orinoco card, which means it will normally be a MC connector. You want to make sure you get the right pigtail if you do buy an aftermarket antenna. I'd recommend getting your pigtail from the same source as your antenna. Don't do homemade antennas, especially if your trying to use it with a MC connector. Bad idea for a novice.
As a footnote, if you have a marginal connection you should try moving your AP around first and frankly should upgrade the antenna(s) on the AP before you worry about your client device. Much easier and usually a better choice.
Folken, kwebb, thanks for your replies. The 8200 I have is wireless ready, but it did not come with a wireless card. A friend of mine had a Broadcom card and he came over and installed it. We have found that the Broadcom card, at best, pulls in a very weak signal, and that the internal atenna may be the culprit.
I am now thinking of getting a wireless card to put into one of the two empty card slots along the side of the laptop. These cards are easier to come by and some already come with atennas. I've been told I would be better off getting one of these.
