CPU showing 3.5 GHz and 800 MHz?

Forum CPU & Components : CPUs CPU showing 3.5 GHz and 800 MHz?

Word :    Username :

Well I purchased a new CPU as I believe my old one had a bad core. After installing it I noticed that the system said it was only running @ 800 MHz. I did some research and determined that maybe the bios needed to be updated, because cool n' quiet was disabled and I've seen others using the same cpu/ motherboard combo with success. After updating the bios the bios, system, and directx read the cpu running at 3.5 GHz like it should be. Then I ran CPU-Z and it's reading it at 800 MHz like before. To test the system I ran COD- Black Ops and it struggles with minimal settings which this setup should be handling high settings with no problem. So I believe it really is running at the lower speed. Do I really need to go buy another motherboard or can something be done? If in fact I do need a new motherboard and RAM. What would work best with this processor and graphics card?

Thanks!

Not really :)

It's Cool & Quiet ---- AMDs power management utility. When you put a load on the CPU it will 'zoom' to stock speed

edit:

HOWEVER ---- I don't see the PhII 970 on the CPU support list. Is this your motherboard ? --->

http://www.asus.com/Product.aspx?P_ID=8jYT1euVL4wCyH04

I see two 955s and 2 965s -- no PhII 970

Ignore me :)

Can you run superPI 1M? If it takes ~19s or better to finish then your CPU is running at 3.5GHz.

And where did you get the BIOS that support your CPU? Because ASUS don't provide BIOS for support that CPU in your mobo.

Cool & Quiet is disabled in the bios though. Isn't that the only way it can be enabled or disabled? Yes that is my motherboard though. I see that it isn't on the list, but the "expert" at CompUSA told me there is no difference between the 965 and the 970 so it will work. I remember seeing others online with this cpu/board combo, but I could be mistaken I guess. So you think I need a new motherboard then?

Thanks!

Ok, it ran Super PI and took 1m 26s to finish the 1M.

I just installed the newest one (1510) that ASUS had on their website for my motherboard, because I didn't see one specifically for my processor and the old bios (0603) was from 2008. Doing this made the system and bios see my processor as 3.5 GHz instead of the 800 MHz it was reading btw.

So, did you rerun the test now that it's reading the right speed?

Can you post the link of BIOS that your downloaded?

1M 26s for superPI 1M is crazy man my old Athlon XP 2600+ Barton @1.2GHz (downclocked) takes 1m 34s, so, your CPU definitely is running at 800MHz all the time.

Run superPI 1M again and let me know the results

I believe it is possible under the *Power Options* in the Control Panel to set a low-power state (which runs 4x200MHz) without enabling C&Q in the BIOS.

Good to see that 1510 recognizes the 970

The test was just done earlier today, after the bios was updated and the system/bios showing 3.5GHz and CPU-Z/performance showing 800MHz.

I have been using the high performance power plan. The only advanced option I see for the "processor power management" is "system cooling policy" which is set to active. I've tried to Google it and nothing really turned up.

Yeah, now if I could only get it to run like the system and bios says it is. :)

Would manually changing the CPU multiplier in the bios to 17.5x work? Right now CPU-Z says it's at 4x.

Reply to stilLearning8

Change it in the BIOS to x17.5 and disable C1E support.

I changed the "CPU Modifier" to 17.5 and made sure C1E was disabled in the bios. When I ran CPU-Z it still shows the processor modifier at x 4. I rebooted into the bios to make sure the change took and it did. Any ideas as to why the changes didn't take in windows? :pfff:

Thanks!

I don't really know what's going on but you might want to call your mobo manufacturer/send them an email and explain the situation and see if they have a BIOS update or something. It might still be CPU not supported fully.

^That's the problem.

Even if your mobo and you can work with it without problems, the mobo don't recognize the CPU totally and that's a problem.

Yeah I guess I made a mistake by listening to the tech at the store. I e-mailed ASUS support so I'll see what they say. What would you suggest I do though: new motherboard and memory or just get a new cpu that is on the supported list?

Thanks again for your advise! :)

Now?

I'd go with a supported CPU (not high end CPU) and when BD comes out, upgrade your rig with all new components.

Yeah that sounds good. Your talking about BullDozer right? Hopefully the price will not be crazy for them when they come out.

Thanks!

BD = Bulldozer, new CPUs from AMD that comes with different socket (AM3+) not compatible with AM3 mobos.
