Hey,

I just installed my new Asus GTX 570 DirectCU II running @ 742MHz with 0.95v Vcore (so basically stock). Ever since I have noticed a strange buzzing when gaming. Initially I thought it was the cooler on the GPU but after further investigation it appears to be coming from the PSU. This isn't like a fan motor rattling noise, more like an electric frequency buzzing or something. My investigations involved playing with the GPU fan speed and holding my ear up against different components. I have come to the conclusion it is the PSU because the noise is loudest when I hold my ear to the rear exhaust of the PSU (the direction of the sound also seems to be coming from there).

An ideas what could be wrong? Or how I can test?

My CPU is running @ 4GHz with a 1.35v Vcore and has been for a while. My PSU is the BeQuiet Dark Power pro 650w.

Thanks

You may want to update your Member configurajtion to reflect your new purchase.

Lest we jump to conclusions about the source of the sound, I suggest you take an empty paper towel tube, place it against your ear, and slowly move it around from component to component, to isolate it.
Then let us know what you learn from that.

If I run, say, Furmark I get that type of sound, but it's coming from the GPU.

I also get it from the CPU sometimes with certain burn tests. I heard it the other day running Prim95 Blend tests.

If it is your PSU then it probably needs to be replaced, but try listening to see if it's actually the GPU.

I have tried the paper towel tube trick and have come to the same conclusion. The noise is loudest when I have to tube pointed to the rear exhaust of the PSU. I say loudest, I mean that if I am listening through the tube, with my other ear blocked, this is the only time I can hear the buzz.

The buzz is actually there pretty much all the time but I can actually hear it over my fans when benching with Unigine or running games.

I can see why I thought it was the GPU first as obviously this is the only thing that has changed in my system. Could it be that the PSU is now being overload/stressed to almost max?

The PSU seems like good quality (just read a quick review) but you should list your full system specs... you never mention the CPU or mobo or RAM etc.

Yea thats my bad, I don't think my sig was set to be public.

Full system spec:

CPU = i5-750 @ 4GHz (1.35v) cooled with a Scythe Mugen 2 Rev B
RAM = 4GB (2x2GB) Crucial Ballisix PC3-12800
Mobo = Biostar TPower i55
Storage = Intel X-25MG2 80GB and Samsung Spinpoint F1 1TB

And then you already know:

PSU = BeQuiet Dark Power Pro 650W
GPU = Asus GTX 570 DirectCU II @ 742MHz

How do I actually get my sig to show?

It's in your profile under Forum Options.

Well, if the system is not misbehaving, I would not worry about the buzz. If it drives you batty, buy a new PSU and try see if that gives you peace of mind.

Yea thats basically it.

I wonder if I have plugged my GPU in correctly.

I have two PCIe 6pin cables coming from my PSU and the GPU takes one PCIe 6pin and one PCIe 8pin. There is an 6-8pin adaptor that comes with the GPU that has two PCIe 6pin sockets running into one PCIe 8pin. So I have plugged one of my 6pin cables from my PSU into one of the 6pin sockets in the adaptor (leaving the other free) and plugged the 8pin connector on the adaptor into the GPU. I have then plugged the other 6pin cable from the PSU directly into the GPU. Is this correct? The manual didn't say anything.

You have plugged-in the GPU correctly.
