Take a look at a less than $650 system I picked out for a friend?

My friend saved up two months salary right out of college to build his first gaming computer to play SCII. This is what I helped him pick out on St. Patrick's Day and built on 3/22/11 on Tuesday thanks to Newegg's awesome 3 business day shipping.

CPU: AMD Phenom II x4 955 = $130

Motherboard: MSI 870A-G54 AM3 = $95

Ram: G.SKILL Ripjaws Series 4GB = $45 with 10% discount at the time

GPU: EVGA 01G-P3-1371-TR GeForce GTX 460 = $160 It was 160 and has 20 dollar rebate

HDD: Caviar Black 640 gb = $55

PSU: Antec 550W Modular = $65

Case: Used Antec 900 case = $50
OS: Win7 Home Premium x64 = $30

So what do you guys/gals think of what I picked out for him. He didn't want to spend extra for the the phenom ii x4 which was $20 then, but is $140 and .2GHz faster. He also opted out of the thuban or sandybridge which would of been the 2400k. The motherboard would of been at least $150 and less features. He will not overclock at all so getting a black edition is just in case if he changes his mind.

I also couldn't recommend AMD/ATI radeon 5770 which would of been cheaper and similar performance because my brother had an ATI card that was a nightmare messing with drivers for SCII to work over Christmas break. I hope future drivers will be better since I do like the bang for your buck.

Overall, it took us less than 3 hours to assemble, but this is the first system that I primarily put together since my first gaming computer had two friends helping to assemble. Thanks for any opinions.

Seems okay. You may be able to do standard processing...do not expect it to be a 'whoa' factor.

Nothing wrong with that for a mid range gamer....

just needs a good monitor to show it off...

happy gaming etc

He actually got a 21.5 inch 5 ms Acer 1080p monitor since he was under his max budget of 750 in components only.
