Any benefits to an ATI / AMD setup?

Looking to build a strictly gaming PC (with a little photo editing capability) for a family member and the way I see it, ATI and AMD are both budget-centric with good performance.

I know that AMD owns ATI, so with that in mind, are there any benefits to using their CPU and GPU together?

Yes, but only if you want the option to add a second GPU. AMD motherboards don't natively support SLI (nVidia's dual card technology), so if you choose an AMD CPU and a nVidia card, you're eliminating an upgrade path. Other than that, there is no advantage to staying in the family.
  2. Unless you get an Nvidia chipset. Then you can use SLI although nvidia chipsets are generally not recommended.
  3. the nvidia chipsets are old though and getting obsolete
