What type of message do wireless clients transmit when they are searching for a specific wireless network?

It's called a ping and in basic terms, it send a small packet of data to the address and sees if it gets a response. You can do it manually in a Command form by typing ping followed by the router's address, say 192.168.0.1 for a Netgear - 192.168.2.1 for Belkin - and if the router is out of range, you get back a negative message back.
