More about system build year olds
  1. 4gigs of ram is useless if youre using 32 bit windows.
  2. trade that coolermaster PSU for a lower wattage corsair builder series (430w). higher quality PSU for about the same price.

    keep the dualcore

motherboard should come with atleast a couple SATA data connectors, so you wont need to buy an extra

SAMSUNG F3 500gb HD is a better choice than that WD blue series, and the samsung is only a few bucks more expensive

also: DDR3 1333 will more than suffice, you dont need to spend the extra money on 1600. youll never notice the difference

since youre running win7 32bit, you could maybe even downgrade to 2gb of ram seeing how 32bit OS probably wont recognize all 4gb
  3. ^ +1 On the Spinpoint F3 HDD and DDR3 1333.

Keep the 4GB of RAM though and get 64bit Windows. There is no reason not to at this point.

Also the Antec 300 Illusion is a better deal as it comes with ( filtered ) front fans for the same price. The fans are 3 speed and nearly silent on low while still moving quite a bit of air.

  5. Well, unless you are getting an aftermarket cooler for your CPU, you won't need the AS5 thermal compound. The included heat sink will already have thermal compound on it. I am not sure why you think you need the Link Depot SATA cable? Here is an Antec Power Supply that would be more than enough to support your build for $30 after rebate:

Sorry I missed your post while I was making changes. I will consider that case also. I am looking for a quite and a durable case (power switches) as I am put the computer is kids study room and 6 year old do tend to hit stuff sometimes with his toys.

Thanks. I have not build a system in a very long time. I thought I would need the paste and OEM harddrive may not include a SATA cable.

Thanks so much for your time.

I will look into 64bit Windows (Got to check with wife's work/univ. to see if we can get discounted OS)
  9. The motherboard will come with SATA cables.

The 300 Illusion is my "go to" case for general use computers as it comes with the extra cooling for the same price as the 300.
  10. You are right about the OEM hard drive, but most Motherboards supply at least two SATA cables, as well as other connectors.
  11. Even a 32bit OS will do better with 4GB of RAM even though it can only "see" 3.25 or there about. I ran 4GB on 32bit XP and could tell when I upgraded from 2GB.
  12. mobo/cpu is 131.98 with mobo shipping of 2.99

You could also look into a couple mobo/cpu bundles currently going on:
    http://www.newegg.com/Product/ComboDealDetails.aspx?ItemList=Combo.566253

    http://www.newegg.com/Product/ComboDealDetails.aspx?ItemList=Combo.566265

That's an x2 & x3 option. Using zip code 78717 both had free 3 day shipping.
  13. The X3 450 is a sweet little chip for the money. I am not on my home machine right now and am using an X3 440 I built for a family member. The triple core chips are a great deal for the price. Much more futureproof than a dual core and only $20 more with that combo.
  14. I like the X3 CPU.

However I have not put a system with a Micro ATX MB yet.

Any pro/con of a Micro ATX ( are they better than ATX?)

Thanks so much for helping. This will keep kids happy and not asking to use parents desktop/laptop each time. :D

Micro ATX just is smaller with fewer expansion slots. You do not need a full ATX as you will not be adding multiple graphics cards and sound cards and other add ons.

    Understood.

Should I then look for a Micro ATX X Case or leave it as ATX Mid Tower for future use?

I don't like micro ATX cases. Too small for good cooling or cable management. I would still get the 300 / 300 Illusion.
  18. Is this looking better?

  20. Looks good to me also! :sol:
  21. I was getting ready to order and review everything again.

The Ant3c case lists "Motherboard Compatibility = ATX"

Am a looking for any issues or mods with Micro ATX MB installation?
  22. Nope. I am using an Antec 300 Illusion with a micro ATX board right now.

  27. Thanks "anort3" and 'clarkjd".

Put the system together and like it.

How do I make anyone stop installing any software (kids planning to explore online flash games and may install something unknowingly). I have installed Antivir and it has served me well in the past. (or should I ask this question in another section of the forum.

At present there is only user that I created when I installed OS.

    Thanks again!

Create an admin account for you, and create a secondary account for the kids,
you'll be able to set what you allow the kids to use or not.

I use Avira antivirus combined with Malwarebytes to keep my PC clean. Just pay attention to the Programs list under Control Panel and run an antivirus and Malwarebytes scan once a week. Should keep your PC nice and clean.
