MSI afterburner readings?

Last response: in Components

I just downoaded msi afterburner yesterday, so far it's been great; as cranking the fan speed up on my two gtx 470's keeeps them at around 70 degrees c when I'm playing games (as opposed to overheating and crashing after a couple of hours when the fan is on auto)
What I don't understand is why does it say that they're both running at 40 degrees c when I first fire the machine up? Do gpu's heat up instantly?

Well I was thinking something along the lines of room temperature. I'm estimating the temperature to be about 25 degrees in this room.
So in the 90 or so seconds it takes to get out of hyberation and into windows where I can view the program they must heat up around an additional 15 degrees? I would have thought it would take a slightly longer time to build up heat.

Basically my question is whether or not this is normal and I'm getting an accurate reading from msi? I'm guessing that it is.

Apologies if I'm asking stupid questions.

I understand that many are unknowledgeable in this field and apologise if my words are demeaning.

40 centigrade is very normal and healthy for two 470(s) in an SLI configuration.

Two such video cards use alot of wattage and it is natural for them to touch 40 on startup, electricity creates heat.

Ever look at the temperature dial on a kitchen oven? Why does it start at 200 F ? Because it doesn't make any sense to have a oven set at 100 F..... and clear, the minute you turn an oven on it isn't 200 F....

Same with video cards, if there is no time under any conditions that you expect a video card to be at a temp BELOW 40C, then you simply start the scale / dial at a temperature that make some sense...... and no they don't instantly go from room temp to 40C

first of all the cards are not suppose to overheats and crash. The drivers are using robust methods to switch the cards in thermal throttle which slows the cards down when they get too hot. As soon as your card start to crash of heat issues that means all the safety measures incorporated is being bypassed which mean you can destroy your card. Msi afterburner is based on Rivatuner and the creator of Rivatuner will never use such measures to bypass safety features on gpus and their drivers. If Msi afterburner is allowing you to do that I suggest you uninstall it and install Rivatuner.

Yeah, it was doing that before I installed msi after burner.
That was the whole reason I installed it; so i could crank the fans up and keep the temps low.
I might try ravatuner though.
Thanks.
