do I need to remove the heat-sink from the cpu before I install the cpu to a different motherboard

If the CPU has stuck to the Heat Sink when you remove the Heat Sink then gently prise it off with a flat head screw driver. Just go around the chip and try levering it at different points until it pops off. If you just mean do you have to remove the Heat Sink the answer is yes and greghome has said.

I would remove it but dont forget you`ll need some thermal paste when you put it on another motherboard.

Better to boot the computer and run 10 minutes of Prime95 or something like that. The heat will soften the thermal compound. No need to pry.
