Is my i7 920 core voltage too high? Should I lower it?

Why is my pre-built HP e9290f desktop from Bestbuy with i7 920 @ 2.67GHz (default) running a "Core Voltage" of 1.656 V? I've never overclocked anything in my life (don't know how, although would like to). Should I lower the voltage or just leave it where it's at and overclock to higher speeds (after learning first of course). I'm only asking because i've just began my research in how to overclock CPU's and continuously keep running into the statement that 1.6V is too high and will burn out the CPU quickly. Thanks for any response ahead of time!

That's definitely way too high. What kinds of temps are you seeing? That almost looks high enough to doubt whether it's accurate.

I knew it... I don't even know how to overclock it so have no idea how it got a voltage of that....HP must of set it there when they made this PC. It's been like this for about 13 months now and running great no issues. Just decided to start upgrading a couple of components and looked into overclocking CPU and found this out. Here is a pic of my temps. Any suggestions are appreciated.

Honestly, I'd bet that it's just misreading the voltage. That voltage is simply too high to believe, especially on something like an HP. Your temps look fine too, though load temps would be more useful. As for overclocking? I'm afraid you might have a hard time with that, since most computer manufacturers like to lock down the motherboard and eliminate any overclocking options from the BIOS.

Ok I suppose i'll just leave it as is if my temps are good at that voltage (hopefully it is just a fluke). It's been like that for over a year now and no issues. I'll just see how it pairs with my new GTX 570 rather than this GTX 260 it came with. Thanks for your time!

Can you use CPU-z to verify your voltage?

CPU-Z is what was used in the first place, and is reading upwards of 1.6 volts.
