the intel cores are just plain faster and work harder then the AMD ones. Like psycho i would choose the Intel i3 (although not in a heartbeat), i also own the Phenom II x4 955.

so for gaming go with the i3, but in which case would the phenom out perform the i3?

video encoding, certain software programs where you need four cores, and in price. you can get a AM3 ATX mobo + 4GB of RAM for the price of an 1155 ATX board, plus you need the more expensive P67 to OC. the phenom II x4 is still a viable gaming CPU and will be for some time. like i said, the i3 is the better gaming CPU but I would not choose it in a heartbeat.

i3-2100 vs 955
The phenom wins in video creation
DIVx encoding ( but not my much)
x264 HD encoding
Etc etc, the phenom wins at encoding but loses a lot in gaming.
Tbh, I would just get a quad core i5.

random question, but does it matter which cpu you have to run a triple monitor setup?

I have a Phenom II x4 965 BE and its great for gaming, even without overclocking.
I have a HD Radeon 5770 to compliment it.

for gaming? not really, both CPUs you mentioned will do the job. the GPU is really the work horse in gaming.

A 965 is an overclocked 955.

for gaming the i3 2100 poops all over phenom x4's and x6's. you need a 3.8ghz phenom x 4 to beat an i3 2100 in gaming, and even then it's only better in a couple of games that use more than 2 cores, the rest of the games that use 2 cores the i3 will beat any phenom up to 5ghz.
